I chose a modern font and a vibrant accent color for CoDA to help them stand out in a sea of papyrus and burnt umber. Archaeologists are typically set in their ways, but CoDA always challenged the status quo and recommended new solutions to old problems. I felt their bold stance should be accented by a bolder red.
The logo would be nearly impossible to read in smaller formats, so I created a simplified brand mark/stamp to place in those scenarios. For the stamp, I used square brackets from the same font family as the rest of the logo. I thought it would be fun for the brackets, used in coding expressions, to collapse upon the ‘o’, creating a camera-like glyph. The founders of CoDA were archaeological site photographers before specializing in archival practices, so that was a nod to their past and present.
We had our whole team photographed at UC Berkeley to come up with some business cards that reflected our personalities. It was very important to the executive director that we be memorable while networking.
CoDA needed a website that could be kept up to date, while they refined messaging but wanted their website to stand out visually. I designed a UI with offset text blocks but heavy use of photography so the archaeologists and heritage specialists could identify with our projects and clients, but the aesthetic would feel modern and hi-tech. I then customized a Squarespace theme with javascript and CSS to get the design to spec without limiting the ability of content editors in the future.
